Fährhaus Wilhelmine home page: deep blue hero with opening status, below it the daily menu as text.

The brief

A restaurant on the water with a menu that changes daily. In the evening, guests look for three things on a phone: are you open, what is there, can I get a table. Everything else is secondary.

Decisions

  1. 01

The menu is content, not a PDF

Today's menu sits on the page as text — readable without zooming, findable by Google, editable in two minutes. Nothing to download.

  2. 02

    Opening status in the hero

"Open today until 23:00" answers the most common question before anyone scrolls. The dot beside it is green when the kitchen is open; no further explanation needed.

  3. 03

A serif with wonk, not menu-card curlicues

Fraunces with its slightly skewed axis gives the house character without sliding into chalkboard script. Prices are set in mono — they are there to be read, not decorated.

  4. 04

    Reserving means calling

A form at eight in the evening is the wrong route. The button dials; anyone who would rather write finds the address next to it.

Result

A guest standing on the street knows within five seconds whether they can eat here tonight — and calls from the same view.
